The Dead Sea, located in southern-west Asia on the territory of Israel and Jordan, lies in a rift valley which came into being as result of Afro-Asian fissure over two million years ago at the turn of the Tertiary and the Quaternary. The Jordan River is the main tributary of this 76 kilometers long, 17 kilometers wide and 350 meters deep sea. There are no outflows therefore correctly the sea should be referred to as a lake. Interestingly, the 1050 km surface area of the sea is the deepest depression in the world (400 meters below sea level!). As the legend says, on the southern shore of the sea there were two cities ¾ Sodom and Gomorrah - burnt down by God with His fiery rain.In the Bible the Dead Sea is called the Eastern Sea, the Salt Sea or the Sea of Arava. Its salinity is 8 times higher than salinity of the Atlantic Ocean, 7 times higher than in the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, 14,5 higher than in the Black Sea, and finally 40 times higher than in the Baltic Sea.

The potassium (K) contents in the Dead Sea is almost 20 times higher than in the Atlantic Ocean, there is 35 times more magnesium (Mg), 42 times more calcium (Ca) and 80 times more bromine (Br).

Because of high salinity the Dead Sea differs considerably from any other sea on the planet. While in other seas the amount of sodium chloride equals 77%, in the Dead Sea it is merely 25-30%, and the magnesium salt contents is up to 50%.

Nowhere else on Earth one can observe the crystallization of potassium salts as a result of the sea water evaporating. Thus it is possible to artificially crystallize potassium salts from the Dead Sea water, while it cannot be done in other water bodies, even in specially created crystallizing basins. The output of bromine and potassium carbonate has been conducted in the Dead Sea since 1930.

In the waters of the Dead Sea there can be found such trace elements as copper, zinc, cobalt and others. Ions of these metals are easily absorbed by different natural substances such as organic substances, calcium phosphate or iron hydroxysalts. It is also worth noting that in the bottom of the Dead Sea there were found sulphur and natural asphalt seams. Since the Dead Sea came into being, on its bed there has been created a 100 meters thick sedimentary layer of loam. It is so called Dead Sea Loam which contains 45% of salt, 5% of biomass and 50% of water.
